The celebration of student success seems omnipresent in May. Students celebrate their accomplishments, bid goodbye to the known, and charge ahead into the unknown. Success and excitement for what is to come color the academic scene.
Dress For Success, a center for non-profit excellence, is a community resource of the Women’s Resource Agency, working to insure that personal and professional development become available to women who have not been included within the privileged academic community. The Agency ‘s mission is to help women to help themselves by providing a core of professional and personal development services, plus youth services, that stress character building, leadership, and mentorship for youth ranging from 8th to 12th grade.
Beth Roalstad, Executive Director of Women’s Resource Agency, shared a historical perspective with CSR+ about the history of WRA. In the 33 years since its inception in Colorado Springs, the Agency has garnered resources in the form of private donations, grants, scholarships, and contracts to support much needed materials to the program. Program specialists surround their clients with support and provide multi-tiered levels of assistance for women who wish to enter the work force but require help in order know how to begin.
Beth and Christie P. Linn, Director of Adult Services, described the concept of “wrap around services” for the Agency’s clients. They estimate that the 1,000+ women who have participated in the Agency’s programs have been able to transition from disenfranchisement to career savvy self-sufficiency by making use of career coaching, interview practice, resume preparation, job club activities and “dress for success” persona via appropriate interview clothing, career apparel, and individual planning and consultation.
Beth, Christie, and the entire staff have worked to provide a safe zone within which this can occur. Located at 750 Citadel Drive East, Suite 3116 , (adjacent to J. C. Penny) the Agency’s offices provide multiple areas for clients to seek support. This locale was chosen because “it is a main bus transfer hub; it’s a safe and secure space, and our clients can be anonymous if necessary.”
The 3,000 square foot office houses individual conference room, computer modules, a workshop mini-complex, and rows of career apparel “that our program specialists assist the client to choose as their interview wardrobe.”
Clients receive the first apparel for no cost, but if they wish to purchase additional clothing “the price is right!” Clients can purchase name-brand suits from an average of $5.00. “Blouses range from 50 cents to $1.00. The public is invited to purchase as well, but the prices will be somewhat higher. “$8.00 for a suit.”
“Individual donors have been most generous,” Beth told us. “However, there is a great need for women’s undergarments and hosiery, which must be new. Some of our clients have left their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs, so you can see how much they need.”
Beth, Christie, and the WRA team have planned special events throughout the year to attract more contributions to the Agency. They are presently planning “Fashion to he Rescue” a gala event co-sponsored with Dillard’s, the Colorado Springs Fire Fighters, Zonta (international women’s organization), The El Pomar Foundation, and Pikes Peak United Way. The $60.00 ticket will provide much needed capital for ongoing activities throughout the year.
On September 24th, “Ladies Who Lunch” will celebrate women and girls who require access to community resources that interface with mental and physical health. Our readers may learn more by calling WRA at: 471-3170.
“We always welcome help,” Beth said. “We certainly could use interns to help out with staffing, and bring in their own community awareness. “ Presently Beth has intern recruits from Colorado College, but she certainly would welcome university students from other area universities as well.
WRA is a Family Empowerment Team that partners with several agencies in the Colorado Springs area. To learn more about this resource, Beth and her staff welcome your inquiries, interest, and assistance. They are only a phone call away: 471-3170.
May is, indeed, a special month of celebration. Dress for Success is very much a part of that positive picture.

The Fifth Annual Colorado Springs Undergraduate Research Forum, a venue that celebrates college students’ academic work within the area of Letters Arts and Sciences, made a galactic impression on the community scene on April 12th at the United States Air Force Academy Fairchild Hall. Students from UCCS, Colorado College, and the United Stated Air Force Academy took center stage as recipients of an invitation from their mentor/professors who deemed their work worthy of a larger audience.
The journey from nominee to actual participant was not a walk in the park. The selection process began in fall, 2007, when students submitted proposals for consideration in many disciplines. A committee of university faculty reviewed the proposals and selected what they considered to be the best examples of academic research from each college. UCCS students joined their peers from Colorado College and the United States Air Force Academy exhibiting their work in poster sessions, oral sessions, and gallery entries.
Margie Teals-Davis (see Colorado Springs Record+ special article in this issue) spearheaded the UCCS involvement from start to finish. “I’m busy this month,” Margie told us. “Not too much time to sleep since we are coming down to the wire.”
Early-morning sessions ranged from political economy, terrorism and executive privilege, the functioning of the brain, to the artist and his influences on society. Undergraduate talent was palpable and visible in the halls and during the poster session from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, as students displayed and explained their studies from biology, chemistry, psychology, geography, virtual communication, physics, and kinesthetic activity.
The gallery connecting oral and poster sessions to afternoon oral sessions housed contributions in sculpture, painting, and more. Each artist in the gallery provided an overview of how s/he came to create the work, its construction, and personal as well as communal significance. The Air Force Academy’s venue provided a rich backdrop of immaculate glass windows, splendid mountain views, and a pristine blue sky to complement the art works.
United States Air Force cadets regaled the participants with song during the lunch break, and the afternoon oral sessions provided additional food for thought with topics such as waves of ideas, literary conflicts and deaths, crime and punishment, South American realities, women, the military, and society, forming leaders, and physics and chemistry.
Colorado Springs Record+ wishes to commend the undergraduate students who chose to take a risk and submit their work for public view. We also salute the mentor-faculty who took the time to shepherd these students through the process. Once again, members of the academy, wherever they teach, continue to pass the torch to those who will follow in the footsteps of scholars who have made their passion for thinking about academic+community involvement a household word in Colorado Springs.
Colorado Springs Record+ was honored to have been a part of this most prestigious academic endeavor.

PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD by John Millington Synge April 24 - May 3 A young man wanders into a pub on the rural coast of Ireland and tells the tale of how he killed his father with a spade. His story thrills the women of the village, especially the lovely bar-maid, Pegeen. But then his dad turns up, very much alive, and the son will have to kill him all over again. This lovely wacky play caused riots in Dublin when it first premiered in1907. Now it’s a bona fide classic, but just as fresh as ever in the exuberant and
talented hands of our UCCS students.

International Women’s Day in Colorado Springs

March 8th at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs was a Saturday to remember for students young and old, and in between. While hundreds of public-school students attended the regionally famous Science Olympiad spearheaded by Dean Ramaswami Dandapani and associates (see feature article in this issue), UCCS university women and their significant others gathered in the UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art to celebrate International Women’s Day.
This was the first time in UCCS history that “IWD” has been celebrated here, to our knowledge. Margaret Mistry, faculty member in the Department of Languages and Cultures, enlisted the help of university students and professors to create a three-hour spectacular for women throughout the university and beyond.
Professor Pavel Gregorievich Kozhevnikov, adjunct professor of Russian, led the festivities with a historical overview of the day’s importance, and regaled the crowd with tidbits of past “IWD”s from his early life as well as selections from his published poems.
Guest of Honor Cindy Aubrey, News Director of KOAA 5 & 30, provided the audience with sage advice about how best to negotiate the world of broadcasting in addition to sharing significant events in her personal journey to a most prestigious position in the world of television news.
Curtis Smith took the lead as Visual and Performing Arts representative in the program, performing his musical tribute to women with electronic pieces from his recent compositions. His fans filled the Gallery of Contemporary Art with rapt attention and enthusiastic applause.
Professors M. J. Sullivan and Kristen Ortega shared their original poetic compositions as did their students, proving that the creative spirit is being nurtured in creative classrooms throughout the university.
Thanks to Daphne Medina, graduate student of history and ombudsperson for the event, no one went hungry, thirsty, or lacking culinary stimuli. This young woman’s contributions to the day were duly noted by all.
As Professor Aditi Mitra presented closing remarks to the celebration, inviting ongoing collaboration among women in whatever phase of life they may be, the audience provided all the celebrants with a rousing round of applause. Well done, AWD celebrants! We look forward to growing the celebration even more next year.
Special thanks to all our college assistants, Iñigo, Andrea, Isabel, and Kati. Heartfelt thanks to the newly inaugurated Department of WEST, Womens/Ethnic Studies, Professors Andrea Herrera, Abby Ferber, and VAPA Chair Suzanne McCauley who contributed financially to the project. Let us not forget Gallery Director, Christopher Lynn, who provided us with most energized place to celebrate. It was, as M. J. Sullivan said, “the beginning of a major collaborative energy swell.”
Brava!

Colorado Springs, CO 80903
His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well. At age 82, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. Don’t look for him in some kind of semi-retirement; look for him out on the road, playing for people, popping up in a myriad of T.V. commercials, or laying down tracks for his next album. B.B. King is as alive as the music he plays, and a grateful world can’t get enough of him.
THE WORLD FAMOUS GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA
Friday, April 11, 2008 - 7:00 PM (Doors open 6:00 PM)
Pikes Peak Center
190 S. Cascade Ave.
Colorado Springs, CO 80903
The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance bandleaders back in the Swing era of the 1930s and ’40s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts, and the drawing power at theatres, hotels, and dance pavilions built and sustained the momentum of popularity.
Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942, at the height of its popularity, volunteered for the Army and then organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain servicemen, and then, on December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a single-engine plane from England to precede his band to France, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later.
The 19-member band continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements that keep exciting fans who have not heard them played for a while. Additionally, they are also playing more modern selections in the big-band style, carefully selecting only those newer tunes that lend themselves naturally to the Miller style and sound, carefully selected pieces that will stay around for a while. The entire repertoire which now exceeds 1,700 compositions keeps the band popular with both young and old.

THE CHORALE: MUSIC’S FIRE, GREAT WORKS VI
Saturday, April 19, 2008 - 8:00 PM (Doors open 7:00 PM)
Pikes Peak Center
190 S. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903
The 6th in our “Great Works” Series, Music’s Fire, continues our commitment to perform the great choral masterworks. Music’s Fire explores music’s ability to entice, comfort, celebrate and judge. “Solomon’s Invocation to Music” an excerpt from the full oratorio, Solomon, by Handel, depicts a court entertainment designed by the King to entice the visiting Queen of Sheba. The oratorio conveys music’s passionate ability to arouse emotions in its listeners through irresistible, lavish and contrasting madrigals ranging from love’s tragic disappointment, to war, to erotic suggestion. “Denn Alles Fleish” from Brahms’ enduring Ein Deutches Requiem offers profound and radiant comfort with its gigantic fugue and serene closing coda. In “The Testament of Freedom”, by Randall Thompson, we celebrate some of man’s highest aspirations and achievements through the writings of Thomas Jefferson. The vivid overpowering, immediate, and inescapable score of “Belshazzar’s Feast,” by William Walton, alternates between a piercing beauty and raw emotive power. It narrates the mindless excesses and cruelties of King Belshazzar’s son Nebuchadnezzar, “weighed in the balance, found wanting,”
Ticket prices range from $16 to $48. Discounts are available for seniors, military, students, groups, and accompanied children. Tickets may be purchased at the Pikes Peak Center Box Office; (719) 520-SHOW (7469); at all TicketsWest outlets; or www.ticketswest.com. Surcharges may apply.

ETTA JAMES
March 28, 2008 - 7:00 PM
Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts
190 S. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903
"It’s Sunday night and I’m filing CDs and listening to Etta James, next record and I stop. Is she really making Prince’s "Purple Rain" over? And did I just hear Marvin Gaye’s "What’s Going On?" What, I wonder, is going on with Etta, the rock-turned-blues-turned-soul-turned-jazz-turned-you name it kind of performer who has always defied all the odds…" David Nathan, music journalist and owner, www.soulmusic.com
Etta James has seen it all: in a life lived to the full, she has experienced all the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the joy, the pain and then, rejuvenation, reinvention and renewal. Perhaps unlike any one of the dozens of albums she has recorded during a distinguished career that spans five decades, ALL THE WAY could be said to capture – if just one record could possibly do so – a miniature kaleidoscope of the emotions, feelings, expressions and sentiments that this remarkable woman has experienced.
With a range of material that would render most singers helpless, the truly legendary Etta James – a three-time Grammy award winner, NARAS Lifetime Achievement, Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer awardee and W.C. Handy Blues Foundation honoree, who rightfully has her own star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame - shows that when it comes to music that speaks to the soul, she is virtually peerless. After all, who else could tackle Leonard Bernstein’s classic "Somewhere" in the space of one record and then give "Holding Back The Years" the kind of world-weary workout that makes you say, "Simply who?" in a reference to the song’s originator, Simply Red.
ART GARFUNKEL
March 29, 2008 - 7:30 PM
Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts

His "beautiful countertenor," as Neil Strauss described Art’s voice in The New York Times, is clear and resonant, surely one of the finest instruments in all of popular music, and a time-honored friend to a world of listeners.
IMAGINATION CELEBRATION: THE VELVETEEN RABBIT
March 30, 2008; Two shows: 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM (Doors open one hour prior to each show)
Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts
190 S. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903
"When a child loves you for a long, long time…then you become Real." So says the Horse to the Velveteen Rabbit in Margery Williams’ famous and much-loved literary classic presented by Imagination Celebration and produced by Enchantment Theater of Philadelphia. Doors will open one hour before each show, with kid-friendly hands-on art activities in the lobby. Kids and adults are invited to bring their very favorite stuffed animal to see the show with them!
A stuffed toy rabbit, given as a gift to a young boy, yearns for the day the boy will choose him as his special playmate, so that he can become real. Through love, devotion and a little bit of magic, he not only becomes a truly beloved toy, but is miraculously transformed into a real woodland rabbit. This innovative production combines the theatrical magic and signature style of Enchantment Theatre Company with the musical magic of Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning composer/arranger Don Sebesky. With an original musical score, extraordinary puppets, masks and magic, Enchantment Theatre Company brings to life this charming tale of love and devotion, creating an unforgettable theatrical experience for the whole family.
