Cheyenne Mountain High School - A science aficionado, senior Sam Meyer of Cheyenne Mountain High School says his passion for science began perhaps “ever since I played with Legos as a kid; I loved to build stuff and when I saw a class that allowed me to do that in school, I thought why not?”
Upon entering high school, Sam immediately joined Cheyenne Mountain’s Science Olympiad Team. The kid who once constructed contraptions with Lego blocks has now built a tremendous reputation for himself in science.
Last school year at Science Olympiad Regionals, Meyer earned a first place in Astronomy, and Experimental Design. The team went on to State where Meyer garnered a second place in Astronomy, and first place in both Experimental Design and the Scrambler, which Meyer dubbed his “favorite event that I spent a lot of my time on perfecting.”
Indeed the extra tweaking of his original design paid off with a 10th place in the Scrambler event at Nationals. “Even though my scrambler was within 2 mm of the wall, there were others made of balsa wood that had faster times—it was amazing to see the humongous number of people that good at science, “ reflected Meyer.
As a senior and veteran Science Olympiad member, Meyer takes on four events this year: Astronomy, Experimental Design, 5-Star Science, and Physics Lab. He hopes to help take the team to nationals once more.
A true science buff with the medals to prove it, Meyer concluded with the declaration, “science is fun—it explores the possibilities of what we can do and explores the knowledge of how the world works.”
